How to prepare Spicy-sweet roasted sweet potatoes, step by step
These sweet potatoes go perfectly with their dip, and the taste is fantastic if you try them.
You would initially think it is a complicated recipe, but that’s not the case. We’re breaking it down for you with a helpful step-by-step:
Step 1: Grind peppercorns and cumin seeds on a mortar
First, we will make a tasty sauce to cook our sweet potatoes. The basic ingredients are ground peppercorns and cumin. Grinding them yourself in a mortar will give them an exceptional taste. 1 tablespoon of peppercorns and 1 tablespoon of cumin is usually enough for this step.
Step 2: Add cinnamon, garlic salt, and paprika
Once the ground ingredients adopt a homogeneous mix, add one tablespoon of garlic salt, one tablespoon of cinnamon, and one tablespoon of paprika. Make sure that you’re mixing everything consistently.
Step 3: Add olive oil and mix together
Then, add 3 tablespoons of olive oil to the mix and continue stirring until you get a homogeneous blend. You will always see small debris, and that’s fine. All we want is to mix without leaving large clusters.
Step 4: Peel the sweet potatoes
To save time, a peeling knife or a peeling machine will be recommended. They will also peel off without taking out the fleshy parts of your sweet potatoes. But if you don’t have a peeling knife, a regular knife will also do the trick. For 2 or 3 guests, it will be fine if you peel 3 large sweet potatoes.
Step 5: Cut the potatoes onto thick strips
As you can see in the picture below and the video, the strips are not necessarily the same size. Don’t get obsessed with shape. It won’t make much of a difference.
Step 6: Add the mixture to the sweet potato strips and mix
After you’re done, we recommend bringing your sweet potato strips into a bowl and combining them with the olive oil-based sauce we prepared earlier. Mix everything together, so every strip gets soaked in the sauce.
Step 7: Arrange the sweet potato strips onto a baking tray
Next, take a clean baking tray and arrange the sweet potatoes already soaked in sauce. Try to leave some distance between them so they won’t stick together during baking. If your oven is set at 240 ºC, baking will take only 40 minutes.
Step 8: Chop spring onions for the dip
Now, as the sweet potatoes bake in the oven, we can prepare the dip. The first step would be chopping the spring onions. You need both the leaf parts and the white parts of the onions because each has its own distinct flavor and texture.
Step 9: Mix with Greek Yogurt
Now you’re done chopping, mix the spring onions with ¾ cup of Greek Yogurt. Make sure you’re mixing well.
Step 10: Add garlic salt and mix
Finally, add one tablespoon of garlic salt to the mix and continue stirring until every ingredient blends, contributing to the final taste.
Step 11: Serve and enjoy
After waiting your 40 minutes, you will have a healthy and very nutritious snack for your guests.
You can also consider a few variations of the recipe with the table below:
Instead of… | You can use… | Comments |
---|---|---|
Olive oil | Cooking spray | This reduces the fat content and the total calories of the recipe |
Garlic salt | Cayenne pepper | If the original recipe is not spicy enough, you can make it hot with cayenne pepper |
Baking | A frying pan | Frying instead of baking will give sweet potatoes a crispier and tastier flavor. However, it won't be as healthy as the original recipe |
Greek Yogurt | Mayonnaise and butter | Using mayonnaise mixes or canned dips instead of Greek Yogurt gives a tasty flavor. However, it won't be as healthy as the original recipe |
Brown sugar | Adding brown sugar to the olive oil-based sauce will add some additional sweetness to your sweet potatoes. However, it will increase the carbohydrate count and won't be as healthy as the original recipe |
