And, even if it seems challenging to achieve that texture and look, it is not. This is a three-stage process because you need to prepare the dish in three parts, but we will make it easier with a step-by-step green bean casserole recipe.

How to make green bean casserole, step by step
First, make sure that you have the ingredients in the section below to make green bean casserole. The chicken broth is probably the only ingredient you will need to prepare beforehand. But it is straightforward. All you need to do is boiling the raw chicken in water with a pinch of salt, onions, carrots, celery, and various spices. After you’re done boiling for 1 to 5 hours, take the water to another container and use the chicken for another recipe.
Once you’re done and have the complete list of ingredients, here’s a step-by-step to prepare green bean casserole:
Step 1: Mix flour, breadcrumbs, and Kosher salt
In a small bowl, the first thing we recommend to do is mixing ¼ cup of flour with 2 tablespoons of Panko breadcrumbs and 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt.
Step 2: Slice 2 onions and add them to the mix
Next, take two onions and slice them into thin strips. Take your onions and mix them with flour, breadcrumbs, and salt. Make sure the mix covers them.
Step 3: Prepare a baking tray and spread the mix
Take a baking tray and prepare it by applying a cover of baking paper and spraying oil or cooking spray. Once done, spread the onions with the mix all over the baking tray.
Step 4: Bake for 30 minutes
Take the baking tray with the onions to the oven. Bake for 30 minutes at a temperature of 475ºF.
Step 5: Cook the green beans
As the onions are baking, you can start cooking the green beans. It is easy; you just need to boil them and add 2 tablespoons of Kosher salt for every pound of green beans.
Step 6: Fry 12 ounces of mushrooms
The onions are baking, and the green beans are starting to boil, so you can take this time to prepare the mushrooms on a separate frying pan. Once the frying pan is hot, add 2 tablespoons of butter, let it melt, and add 12 ounces of mushrooms right after that. Stir and let it fry for a minute and add 1 tablespoon of Kosher salt and ½ teaspoon of black pepper.
Step 7: Add two garlic cloves, nutmeg, flour, chicken broth, and milk
Continue stirring until the mushrooms are brown. When they change their color, add 2 garlic cloves, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 cup of chicken broth, and 1 cup of milk. Stir and continue cooking for one minute.
Step 8: Join the prepared mushrooms with the green beans and onions
Remove the mushrooms and add them to the prepared green beans and the onions that are probably ready by now.
Step 9: Bake for 15 minutes
This last step is fundamental to achieve the texture and feel of a delicious green bean casserole. The ingredients are cooked, but after joining them, bake the mix in the oven using a temperature of 400ºF.

Notes
- This is a 3-stage recipe, but you can speed up the cooking process by cooking different stages simultaneously, as recommended in the table above.
- If you want a thicker, cream-like texture, you could add some cornflour to the mix before the final baking step. Mix the tip of a teaspoon in half a cup of water and when it is homogeneous, add it to the preparation and stir before taking it to the oven.
- You can have a slightly different flavor depending on the ingredients you use to prepare the chicken broth. You can always boil the chicken and take out the water with no other ingredient, but we recommend using vegetables and various spices if you want it to be tasty. You can also buy chicken broth or use instant or microwave soup without the noodles.
- If you prepared chicken broth with actual chicken, an excellent option would be to create a dish that includes green bean casserole, chicken, and a side dish (rice, salad, toast, or bread)
